Children, it is the last hour

Mommy Mantra, December 31, 2014: 1 John 2:18: “Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that the antichrist was coming, so now many antichrists have appeared. Thus we know this is the last hour.”

At the time Saint John was writing this the Church was preparing for a literal last hour. It was time to test men’s soul.

Even today we hear so many preachers saying the end of the world is near. There is a new TV show that is going to explore that very theme. And maybe it can seem as if the end is near, but an end of something is also the beginning of another.

New Year’s is tomorrow and many of us will be making New Year’s resolutions; a process of renewal is what is hoped for. I wonder if the Early Church thought of this time as renewal? After all the Second Coming meant great and powerful changes; frightening changes.

How many early believers were frightened into inaction; how many saw this as an opportunity to turn their lives around?

The reading reminds us that while there will be those who wish to spread fear, take advantage of the times, that we have the truth; and it is on the truth we should focus.

So, with that in mind what truths is God calling you to look at this New Year’s Eve. What lies is he asking to change?
