I am no expert

I am spiritual director but that is a very interesting ministry.  As a spiritual director I journey with moms trying to help them see those sometimes oh too quite God moments in our lives; those moments that if someone else wasn’t there to look with them as well, might just slip by unnoticed.

What I really am is a seeker just like you.  I am on this road to find out who God is calling me to be just as you are.  This bumpy, pothole filled road.  Sometimes the road is level and easy to negotiate.  Other times it is a mess filled with so many caution cones you can’t figure out where the lane shifts are.  Spirituality is a road we must navigate, a  lifelong journey, there is so much to look out for, twists and turns of change that make us rethink our possibilities, reexamine our deeply held beliefs, our direction.  We are the ones drawing the map, writing down the directions, driving the car; and for each the map, the direction and the car are as individual as we are; and like all good travelers we sometimes need to ask for help finding our way.

They say life is a moving target, then so is spirituality, faith and the pursuit of God.  I know for myself that I must do my work, the work at expelling those thoughts, that, because of my faith experience, can only be coming from the devil.   Those thoughts that convince me that I am a horrible mother, wife and friend.  That pursuit of perfect that I have been on all my life, with the thought that if I was only perfect things would be better.  What a crock that is!   We all need help deciphering those negative self conversations, those messages that come to us trying to convince us of our worthlessness, our faults, our missteps.  That is what a spiritual director does, takes their personal experience and their training  to help those who are journeying down that same way, just a little further behind, understand how much God loves us, how worthy we are, how we already have the talents, gifts and tools we need to live the life we are called.

The only thing I can say I am an expert in is not being an expert, but what I do have is a life experience that is unique to me that maybe a guidepost to someone else on this journey.
